Se nel precedente The Station Agent, vittorioso al Sundance, l'autore portava in scena un trio fuori dal mondo, qui i personaggi sono sì dei diversi, innanzitutto l'uno per l'altro (e Mouna non può non notare quanto sia nera Zainab), ma sono al contempo rappresentanti comuni della cittadinanza della metropoli contemporanea, suoi ospiti in entrambi i sensi di marcia. Il senso di lutto che si respira nel film non è marginale né è un retaggio del passato dei protagonisti ma è la constatazione presente e progressiva della morte di un valore di accoglienza e di libertà che l'America si diceva orgogliosa di incarnare. Ad Ellis Island, dove si passava per diventare cittadini, ora si passa per essere schedati, trattenuti, rispediti al mittente. Non è più tempo di parlare di "green card" in chiave di commedia, ma è sempre tempo di portare la macchina da presa nelle strade e di mostrare la città quale è.
