Paine and others lie in front of a special committee, which recommends Smith be kicked out of the Senate. Saunders suggests he can lead a filibuster until his friends find evidence to clear him. Smith begins his 23-hour stand that leads to the "Capraesque" ending. Memorable Scenes: When Smith arrives in Washington, he's wide-eyed and as excited as a school boy. Saunders tries to explain to Smith how difficult it is to write, introduce and pass a bill. A drunken Saunders, who is smitten with Smith, tells him about the graft in the bill introduced by Paine. Paine stands up in the Senate and accuses Smith of owning the land upon which he wants to create a national boys camp. Saunders convinces Smith -- at the Lincoln Memorial -- not to quit. The final minutes of Smith's 23-hour filibuster, when he confronts Paine and gives a speech about "lost causes. " After Smith collapses in the Senate, the overwhelming guilt finally catches up with Paine, who confesses that Smith is innocent and he and others are the crooks.

Worth every penny? Well, not film, as we know, is top class. However, the restoration is not as wonderful as I was expecting. The picture quality varies from very good to okay but that's explained in the booklet. The sound is clear but the volume is set so very low you'll have to crank it up. Deputies of Jefferson Smith kind are now practically extinct, which makes the movie more dated now than ever. But the optimistic, idealistic take on politics, expertly directed by Frank Capra ("It Happened One Night", "It's a Wonderful Life"), still may win some viewers even today, as it did back then before WWII. None other American actor would be better cast as Jeff Smith than the "everyman" James Stewart, who was nominated for Academy Award for this role – nevertheless, the belated and deserved victory came one year later with the leading role (and a great one at that) in "The Philadelphia Story". Holding her own against Stewart in the leading female role is the ever-dependable Jean Arthur ("Shane", "The More the Merrier"), the supporting cast includes Claude Rains (in one of his most villainish roles). When he refuses to go along with Taylor's deal, his mentor, Senator Paine tries to talk to him. He explains that this is the way the world works. When Smith refuses Paine, Paine joins with Taylor and Taylor's evil forces to ruin Smith. They forge Smith's name to the title of the property in question, to make it look like he owned the property he wanted to build the boy's camp on. Senator Paine, requests that Smith step down from his position as Senator. All the other Senators believe Smith is a crook and demand that Smith resign. Now Smith was despondent and ready to give up and go home when his secretary, Saunders, finds him. She talks to him and reminds him that he can't go home and tell all the young boy's he works with that Washington's system is corrupt. That the American Constitution is meaningless. She tells him that he has to get up and together they would figure out some way to fight.

Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2019 Verified Purchase Five stars for the movie, unfortunately three for the Blu-Ray transfer quality. My first observation was that it was grainier than most, but I didn't compare it to my DVD copy. So that may not be a big issue. The eyes adjust. However, I was saddened to see distinct artifacts in the picture when people moved. There were times when an actor would walk across the screen and a trail of splotchy pixels followed him. I saw this more at the beginning, but didn't notice it as much further into the movie. Maybe it lessened, maybe I got used to it. The audio was a bit out of sync with the video, but not enough the the average viewer would be too put off by it. However, around the 2/3 mark, it took a distinct turn for the worst. There were perhaps fifteen minutes where it was approaching a second's delay, but it did clear up before the movie's end.
