"He Knows You're Alone" (1980) is a slasher-thriller about a woman who's stalked by a serial killer in the days leading up to her wedding. Set during the "golden era" of serial killers, this film plays out very well and delivers its fair share of suspense. It was one of the earlier films inspired by John Carpenter's Halloween (1978), so you'll find many similarities between the two—especially in the buildup and brutality. This was a great film; I'm surprised I hadn't already seen it. If you keep an eye out, you'll see Tom Hanks, who actually makes his cinematic debut playing a minor role. "The Godsend" (1980) is this far-out horror about a toddler who kills off all the other kids in the family that adopted her. It's cheesy and stereotypically British ("oi mommy you look so wonderful t'day, care for a cuppa tea? "); but despite the film having its obvious flaws, it's still an entertaining watch from beginning to end. It's definitely a unique film, which is what kept me engaged. A toddler killing other kids?

Seriously now? That's some straight Mary Bell-type shit. Anyways, Angela Pleasence, the daughter of Donald Pleasence ("Dr. Loomis" in the '78 Halloween), stars in this peculiar film. Worth the watch. If you're into supernatural/paranormal mysterious, "The Hearse" (1980) follows yet another woman who has a nervous breakdown and begins noticing supernatural activity shortly after settling down in an odd new town. As her nightmares continue to haunt her, she struggles to settle into the community, which is strangely cold and distant toward her. This film is less of a suspenseful horror and more of a supernatural mystery, so don't expect it to be too scary. With that said, the film still holds up very well and is thoroughly enjoyable, especially if you want to watch something with your elders. (My mother loved it. ) "The Caller" (1987) is a supernatural mystery/thriller about an estranged woman who allows a peculiar man to stay with her after his car breaks down by the woods. Suspicions are raised after she notices inconsistencies in his story, leading her to question who he really is—and what he really wants.
I've been watching a new horror movie every single night for the past few weeks; but rather than the usual titles, I've been checking out lesser-known films from the 70s & 80s—all of which I found online. I decided to write some short reviews of some of the more notable films; I'm hoping this can turn a few people on to something new and interesting. Feel free to use this as a reference sheet! "A Taste of Evil" (1971) is an enjoyable made-for-TV movie about a woman's gradual decent into madness: Susan Wilcox, a young woman who was raped by an unknown man when she was 13, returns home after being institutionalized for several years following a complete mental breakdown. Upon returning home, a series of incidents lead her to wonder if someone—or something—is following and watching her. I have to admit, this was pretty damn good for being a made-for-TV movie. There aren't many suspense scenes but the plot is good enough to keep your interest piqued. This is a great watch if you have nothing else to do or are settling in for the night.
