Save your money and watch Best Marigold Hotel again and be happy that you can see Patel actually smiling instead of spending too much time watching him look vaguely suspicious and overly serious. Wedding Guest is a waste of an hour and a half. There is no ending... just an abnormally long fade to black. As I suspected, the trailer has all the best parts of the movie, and will save you time. As an American lover of Bollywood cinema, I have sat through many filmic forays into the cities and other locales of India. Fantastic visually crafted love letters from India cinema's to India itself, a wonderful retreat in a welcoming world of fantasy. But even though this movie is set in India and Pakistan, it has the cinematic point of view of the outsider. And so it should. Because this is a tone poem about being an outsider.

The dramatic suspense is a strong narrative thread that dips and weaves above a deeper meditation about having no real place in one's own culture of origin. And it addresses this from the point of view of gender as well as temperament. There is human love and beauty but there is painful deception and eventually the truth. Dev Patel commands the screen. Radhika Apte is always nuanced, beautiful and layered. Women may especially enjoy this movie. For the the camera's love affair with Dev Patel's maturing and ever increasing masculine beauty. Saw it several times in the theater and again since I bought it from Amazon. The women who went with me in the theater also like it. Full disclosure: even if I am old enough to be his grandmother, I'm a devout Dev Patel fan. I was happy to see him in such a different role. What older women got right away was that Samira was trying to get out from under the men in her life - her father who was forcing her into marriage; a boyfriend who threw her away when things went wrong; and a man who couldn't even open up enough to tell her his real name. She wanted her freedom. Jay figured things out to late, as many men do. As Radhike said in an interview, the story could have happened anywhere (Puzzle, for example). This film gave us the added benefit of a travelogue through Pakistan and India as well.
